The Commerce Building: Now

The Commerce Building: Then
In 1911 the streets of downtown St. Paul were bustling with streetcars, merchants en route to business meetings, and vendors peddling goods. St. Paul was experiencing a historic boom of economic and civic expansion. That growth was shaped and nurtured by two very important organizations.
The Commerce Club and the St. Paul Association of Commerce had a significant influence in forming public policy and commercial development in St. Paul. At their peak this included over 4200 members from small business owners to large corporations. The Commerce Building was home to their headquarters and it provided commercial space for promising local businesses.
Designed by Herman Kretz, a notable architect and a member of both organizations, The Commerce Building boasts a prominent location, beautiful Terrazzo floors, and a stunning masonry façade topped by an elaborate cornice piece.
It is our privilege to bring this historic building back to life and use it to once again enhance the vitality of the downtown community.
